In the realm of cult literary traditions (as recently described in a flavorwire.com article picked up by <a href="http://huff.to/xedkn7">The Huffington Post</a>) May 25th is <a href="http://towelday.org/">Towel Day</a>, an annual fan holiday celebrating the life and works of SF author and dramatist, Douglas Adams.</p>
<p><a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=adams&amp;title=Hitchhikers+Guide+to+the+Galaxy"><img class="alignright" title="The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams" src="http://imagesc.btol.com/ContentCafe/Jacket.aspx?UserID=ContentCafeClient&amp;Password=Client&amp;Return=T&amp;Type=L&amp;Value=1400052920" alt="" width="186" height="288" /></a>I fell for Adams’ <a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=adams&amp;title=Hitchhikers+Guide+to+the+Galaxy"><em>The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy</em></a><em> </em>when I was a kid and still consider it to be one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. It features the adventures of a hapless galactic traveler named Arthur Dent after he’s saved from the Earth’s demolition (to make way for a galactic freeway). For Towel Day all you have to do is carry your towel and DON’T PANIC.  As the <em>Hitchhiker’s Guide</em> notes, “any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the Galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.”</p>
<p>If you’re new to Adams check out <a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=adams&amp;title=Hitchhikers+Guide+to+the+Galaxy"><em>The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy</em></a>. The audiobooks and radio plays are equally fabulous. There’s a cult classic 1980s BBC television series. Plus there’s a fun and strange Hollywood take with a cast including the likes of Mos Def, Zooey Deschanel, Martin Freeman, Bill Nighy, Alan Rickman, Helen Mirren and Stephen Fry.</p>
<p><a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=Connolly&amp;title=gates"><img class="alignright" title="The Gates by John Connolly" src="http://imagesc.btol.com/ContentCafe/Jacket.aspx?UserID=ContentCafeClient&amp;Password=Client&amp;Return=T&amp;Type=L&amp;Value=9781439172636" alt="" width="101" height="156" /></a>And if you’ve already been moved by the writing of the man who gave us “the Answer to the Ultimate Question<strong> </strong>of Life, the Universe and Everything”—that’s 42—or if you’re just interested in great titles that include science fiction, fantasy, wit, inventiveness, and adventure, here are a few of my favorites to pass on to <em>Hitchhiker’s</em> fans:</p>
<p><a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=fforde&amp;title=Eyre+Affair"><img class="alignright" title="The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde" src="http://imagesa.btol.com/ContentCafe/Jacket.aspx?UserID=ContentCafeClient&amp;Password=Client&amp;Return=T&amp;Type=L&amp;Value=0142001805" alt="" width="95" height="146" /></a><a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=Connolly&amp;title=gates"><em>The Gates</em></a> by John Connolly is a little scary, hilarious and  fabulous. It&#8217;s the a story about a quirky 11-year-old boy who is the only one who knows his neighbors have opened a gap exposing the gates of Hell.</p>
<p>I absolutely love <a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=fforde&amp;title=Eyre+Affair"><em>The Eyre Affair</em></a> by Jasper Fforde introducing literary detective, Thursday Next. She&#8217;s on the hunt for a <a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=yu&amp;title=How+to+live+safely"><img class="alignright" title="How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe by Charles Yu" src="http://imagesc.btol.com/ContentCafe/Jacket.aspx?UserID=ContentCafeClient&amp;Password=Client&amp;Return=T&amp;Type=L&amp;Value=9780307379207" alt="" width="101" height="151" /></a>criminal mastermind out to kidnap characters from great works, including <em>Jane Eyre</em>.</p>
<p>And I found Charles Yu’s <a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=yu&amp;title=How+to+live+safely"><em>How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe</em></a> funny, poignant, and strange. It’s a story of time machine repair, time loops and the relationships between fathers and sons.</p>

I&#8217;m hardly alone in my opinion: check out Jessica&#8217;s <a href="http://www.cadl.org/books-movies/recrev/2010/SherlockSeries1.html">glowing staff review </a>of the first season. PBS is finally airing its second season (already available to put on hold at CADL), but there&#8217;s a major problem: each season is only three episodes long, and for a raving fan like me, that’s hardly enough.</p>
<p>If you find yourself wanting more, take a look at some of the source material. Series 1 was inspired by <a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=doyle&amp;title=study+in+scarlet"><em>A Study in Scarlet</em></a>, <a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=doyle&amp;title=valley+of+fear"><em>The Valley of Fear</em></a><em>, </em>and &#8221;The Adventure of the Dancing Men&#8221; and other stories from <a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=doyle&amp;title=adventures+of+sherlock+holmes"><em>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</em></a>. Series 2 hews closer to the books, the three episodes having been inspired by &#8220;A Scandal in Bohemia&#8221; (From <em>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</em>), <a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=doyle&amp;title=hound+of+the+baskervilles"><em>The Hound of the Baskervilles</em></a>, and &#8220;The Final Problem&#8221; (from <em><a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=doyle&amp;title=memoirs+of+sherlock+holmes">The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes</a></em>).<em> </em>If someone could convince Benedict Cumberbatch to narrate an audiobook of the stories, I’d never again be seen without headphones.</p>
<p>The show departs wildly from the original material, however, and if what you’re really looking for is more of <em>Sherlock</em>&#8216;s signature wit and style, you’d be well advised to pick up Mark Gatiss’s Edwardian mystery novel <a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=gatiss&amp;title=vesuvius+club"><em>The Vesuvius Club</em></a>. Gatiss is a producer, writer and actor on Sherlock: he takes sole writing credit for my favorite episode to date, “The Great Game” and plays Sherlock’s brother, Mycroft Holmes. Now get reading! The game is afoot!</p>

The book award season for the Science Fiction (SF) and Horror genres is in full swing.  On March 31, the <a href="http://www.horror.org/stokers.htm">Horror Writers Association</a> awarded Joe Kinney’s <a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=mcKinney&amp;title=flesh+eaters"><em>Flesh Eaters </em></a>the Bram Stoker Award for best novel and Joyce Carol Oates’ <a href="http://opac.cadl.org/search/q?author=oates&amp;title=Corn+Maiden+and+Other+Nightmares"><em>Corn Maiden and Other Nightmares</em></a> best collection. The <a href="http://www.sfwa.org/nebula-awardsnebula-weekendnominees/">Nebula</a> and <a href="http://www.thehugoawards.org/hugo-history/2012-hugo-awards/">Hugo</a> committees have announced their shortlists. So this seemed as good a time as any to share some of our recent favorite SF &amp; F picks. Check out these and our other SF picks on the Books, Movies + More section of our <a href="http://www.cadl.org/books-movies/recrev/speculative-fiction.html">website</a>.</p>

<a href="http://www.us.worldbooknight.org/">World Book Night</a> is coming up on April 23rd. It is “an annual celebration designed to spread a love of reading and books,” in which registered Book Givers are sent out into their communities with free books for light- or non-readers. While it’s too late to sign up as a book giver this year, you can get in on the action by reading some of the books distributed on World Book Night and encouraging others to read them as well.<a href="http://cadl.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/world-book-night-2012-logo.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-14545 alignright" title="World Book Night 2012 logo" src="http://cadl.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/world-book-night-2012-logo.jpg?w=180&h=170" alt="" width="180" height="170" /></a></p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.us.worldbooknight.org/wbn2012-the-books/see-all-30-books">30 titles</a> on this year’s list are a diverse bunch; they range from non-fiction to science fiction, and from popular teen titles to modern literary classics. CADL staff have already reviewed many of the books; take a look at what we have to say about them:</p>

I didn’t expect to have such a huge response when asking our staff about their favorite poetry but I had to shorten the list drastically for this blog post. These 25 titles reflect a range of styles and voices including the most suggested poet (former Poet Laureate Billy Collins) and the single most suggested work (<em>Where the Sidewalk Ends</em>). It includes poetry that can move you to giggles or tears and works that are innovative in their presentation. We hope you find something fun on the list and feel free to share your favorites with us! ~ <em>Jessica T.</em></p>
